How We Grow

I am Emily Watson, a cut flower grower and owner of Stems Cut Flowers, located here in southeastern Wisconsin. Raised in a farming community and graduating from UW-Madison with a degree in biology/wildlife ecology, it’s no wonder that my work experience in landscaping and flower arranging led me to further my education in cut flower growing and start my own farm.

When you buy from Stems you have direct contact with me, the grower, so you can be sure of the highest-quality flowers and excellent customer service.

  • I select all seeds and plants
  • I personally care for the plants
  • I carefully select each stem to cut at the appropriate time
  • I keep all stems in water with floral preservative, from cutting through delivery
  • I store all stems in a cooler
  • I practice sustainable farming techniques and use minimal packaging

Sustainable Growing Practices

  • I minimize my impact on the environment in every way possible.
  • All flowers are stored and delivered in buckets, not cardboard boxes and plastic sleeves.
  • Healthier flowers and a cleaner environment are the obvious advantages.
  • All buckets used to display and deliver flowers are reclaimed from local retailers.
  • Once destined for the trash, they are now temporary homes for beautiful flowers.
  • Irrigation is done on an as-needed basis. No timers mean no wasted water.
  • Any necessary fertilizing is done with organic fertilizer.
  • Only biodegradable mulches are used.
  • Pesticides are occasionally used, but only when necessary and only on the affected crop. No “just-in-case” broadcasting is ever done.
  • All garden waste is composted and spread on the fields.
